CB Carpentry's Interior Carpentry Services

Interior trim and molding turn plain drywall boxes into finished rooms. CB Carpentry installs trim throughout Massachusetts homes, from a single accent wall to every room in the house.

Each profile is fitted to the room, with coped inside corners, tight miters and scribed edges, so the work still looks crisp years after the paint dries.

The right trim can change how a room feels. Taller baseboards and crown make ceilings feel higher; wainscoting and panel molding add depth and character; a shiplap or board-and-batten wall gives a bedroom or entry a focal point. We bring profile samples, talk through what suits the age and style of your home, and help you pick sizes that fit the room.

Trim projects can be done room by room or all at once. Many homeowners start with one space, like a dining room or primary bedroom, and add more once they see the difference it makes.

This service is part of our Finish Carpentry work.

01 Crown Molding

Crown molding sits where the walls meet the ceiling and draws the eye up, making rooms feel taller and more finished. It is also the hardest trim to install well, because it sits at an angle and has to follow ceilings and walls that are rarely flat. We cope inside corners so they stay closed as the house moves with the seasons, use blocking or backing where needed, and caulk only where it belongs. Crown can be a simple single piece or a built-up design with multiple profiles in living rooms, dining rooms and primary bedrooms.

Built-up crown, with two or three profiles combined, is a good choice for large rooms.

02 Baseboards & Shoe Molding

Baseboard covers the joint between wall and floor, protects walls from vacuums and feet, and anchors the look of a room. Shoe molding or quarter-round covers the small gap at the floor, which is especially useful over hardwood that expands and contracts. We scribe baseboard to uneven floors, cope inside corners and return the ends neatly at door casings. When new floors go in, we can remove and reinstall existing baseboard or replace it with a taller profile that suits the home better.

Taller baseboard is one of the simplest ways to make a room look more finished. Joints are glued.

03 Wainscoting & Beadboard

Wainscoting covers the lower part of a wall with panels or boards and is a classic feature in dining rooms, hallways, stairwells and baths. We install raised-panel and flat-panel wainscoting, picture-frame molding, board-and-batten and beadboard, finished with a cap rail. It adds character and protects walls in busy areas. We lay out panels so they are evenly spaced on each wall and line up with windows, outlets and doors, which is what makes wainscoting look custom rather than off the shelf.

Wainscoting is also practical in mudrooms and stair halls, where it shields walls from scuffs. Caps are fitted tightly.

04 Door & Window Casings

Casings frame every opening and should match the style of the rest of the trim package. We install flat, colonial and craftsman-style casings, add back bands for a heavier look, and fit window stools and aprons. Even reveals around the jamb and tight corner joints are what make casing look right. For a deeper look at this service, see our door and window casing page.

New casing pairs well with new baseboard and crown, so rooms are often trimmed out all at once. When only some trim is being replaced, we match the existing profiles so new and old pieces blend together.

05 Chair Rails & Picture Rails

Chair rails run horizontally around a room about a third of the way up the wall. They protect walls from chair backs and create a natural break for two paint colors or a wallpaper and paint combination. Picture rails sit higher, near the ceiling, and were traditionally used to hang artwork without nailing into plaster; they are still a great choice in older homes. We level these rails across the room even when floors and ceilings are not, and align them with window stools and casings.

In homes with plaster walls, rails are fastened into studs so they hold securely.

06 Shiplap & Accent Walls

Shiplap, nickel-gap boards and panel-molding accent walls are a quick way to give a bedroom, entry or living room a new look. We plan the layout so boards are even at the top and bottom, cut neatly around windows and outlets, and finish the edges with trim that fits the room.

Accent walls are usually finished in a day or two, which makes them one of the quickest ways to change how a room feels. We can also add panel molding behind beds, around TVs or along stair walls for a similar effect at different scales. Edges are trimmed cleanly.

Choosing Trim That Fits Your Home

Taller baseboards and wider casings suit rooms with higher ceilings; slimmer profiles look better in smaller rooms. Colonial homes often take traditional profiles, while newer homes may suit simpler craftsman or flat-stock trim. We bring samples and help you choose.

Common Trim Problems

Open miters, gaps at the floor, baseboards that follow a dip in the subfloor, and caulk-filled corners usually come from rushed installation. Most can be fixed by recutting and reinstalling the affected pieces.

Interior Trim & Molding FAQ

What is the difference between wainscoting and beadboard?

Wainscoting is any paneling on the lower part of a wall. Beadboard is one style of wainscoting made of narrow vertical boards with a small groove, or bead, between them.

Can crown molding go in a room with uneven ceilings?

Yes. We scribe and adjust crown to follow uneven ceilings as closely as possible, and in some cases add a small backer to hide gaps.

Do you install MDF or wood trim?

Both. Primed MDF is stable and economical for painted trim in dry rooms. Solid wood or PVC is better in bathrooms and anywhere that may get wet. We recommend the right material for each room.

Can you add trim to a newer home with plain walls?

Yes. Adding crown, wainscoting, panel molding or a shiplap wall is one of the most effective ways to add character to a newer home.

How do I get a price for trim work?

Call or send the form with the rooms you are thinking about. We look at the space, measure, and give you a quote for the specific trim you choose.
