CB Carpentry's Door & Window Casing Services

Casing is the trim around doors and windows. It covers the gap between the jamb and the wall and does a lot to define the style of a room.

CB Carpentry installs and replaces door and window casing in Massachusetts homes, whether you are finishing a new addition, updating dated trim or replacing pieces damaged during a renovation.

New casing is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make to a room, because every door and window gets it. It is also a common follow-up to other work: new flooring that leaves gaps at the old trim, replacement windows that need interior finishing, or a remodel where walls were moved and the trim no longer matches.

We install casing with even reveals, tight miters and properly set nails, and we match the style to your baseboard and crown so the whole room looks consistent. Inside and out, the goal is trim that looks right and stays tight through the seasons.

This service is part of our Finish Carpentry work.

01 Interior Door Casing

Every interior door needs casing on both sides. We install casing after the door is hung and the jamb is set flush with the wall, keeping an even reveal along the jamb edge and closing the head joints tight. When walls are not flat, which is common, we plane or shim so the casing sits flat without twisting. Styles range from simple flat stock and craftsman heads with a thicker top piece to colonial casing with a back band. Our interior door hanging and casing work can be done together so the door and trim are installed as one job.

02 Window Casing, Stools & Aprons

Windows are trimmed with side and head casings plus a stool, the shelf-like piece at the bottom, and an apron below it. A properly notched and returned stool looks finished from every angle. Some homeowners prefer a picture-frame casing on all four sides instead. Both styles are common in Massachusetts homes and we install either one. New replacement windows often need extension jambs before trim goes on, especially in older homes with thick walls or new insulation; we add those so casing lands flat.

For picture-frame style casing, we miter all four corners and keep the reveal consistent around the window.

03 Exterior Door & Window Trim

Exterior trim protects the edges of siding and keeps water out of the wall. We install exterior casing, head flashing and drip caps around doors and windows, using PVC or rot-resistant wood that stands up to coastal air and freeze-thaw cycles. Done right, exterior trim sheds water away from the opening instead of letting it into the framing. This is also a good time to replace any rotted sill or framing around the opening.

We caulk and seal the trim properly and make sure the head flashing extends past the casing, which is where many older installations fail. PVC lasts longest outdoors.

04 Matching Historic & Existing Trim

In many Massachusetts homes, the original casing profiles are no longer sold. When only part of a house is being updated, matching the trim matters. We compare profiles at the lumberyard, combine stock moldings to recreate a built-up casing, or reuse original trim when it can be carefully removed and reinstalled. The goal is a new doorway or window that blends in with the rest of the house.

When original trim is too damaged to reuse, we can mill or combine moldings to reproduce the profile closely. That keeps one renovated room from looking out of place next to the rest of the original house.

Signs Your Casing Needs Replacing

Split or dented trim, gaps at the miters that keep reopening, casing that no longer meets the wall after new flooring or drywall, and exterior trim with soft or peeling wood are all reasons to replace it. Exterior rot should be handled quickly to protect the wall framing.

Casing Styles at a Glance

Flat stock gives a clean, modern look. Craftsman casing uses a thicker head. Colonial casing has a curved profile and often a back band. Picture-frame casing wraps all four sides of a window. We help you choose a style that fits the house.

Doors & Window Casing FAQ

Can you replace casing without damaging my walls?

We remove old casing carefully to limit damage, but some touch-up of paint or plaster is usually needed. We tell you what to expect beforehand.

What are extension jambs?

Strips of wood added to a window or door jamb so it is flush with a thicker wall. They are common with replacement windows and in older homes.

Do you use PVC trim outside?

Often, yes. PVC trim does not rot and holds paint well, which makes it a good choice for exterior casing, especially near the coast.

Can you trim out new replacement windows?

Yes. We add extension jambs where needed and install interior casing, stools and aprons to finish the opening.
