CB Carpentry's Built-In & Bookshelf Services
Built-ins are cabinets and shelving designed for a specific wall or alcove and attached to the house. They make use of space furniture cannot, and they give a room a finished, custom look.
CB Carpentry designs and builds built-ins for living rooms, dens, bedrooms, mudrooms and dining rooms across Massachusetts, like the bookshelves and window seat shown here.
A well-designed built-in starts with how you will use it. We talk through what it needs to hold, how much should be closed storage versus open shelving, whether you want lighting or glass doors, and how it should relate to the windows, fireplace and trim in the room. Then we build it to fit the space exactly, scribing every edge to the walls and ceiling.
Built-ins are a long-term addition to your home, so we build them with solid materials, sturdy shelving and hardware that holds up to daily use.
This service is part of our Cabinetry & Storage work.

01 Built-In Bookshelves
Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves turn a plain wall into a feature. We build shelves around windows and fireplaces, in alcoves and along entire walls, usually with closed cabinets below and open shelves above. Shelf spans are kept short enough that they will not sag under books, and adjustable shelving lets you change the layout over time. Options include puck or strip lighting, glass doors, crown molding at the top and face frames that match the rest of your trim. Built correctly, they look like they came with the house.
We also plan the shelf heights for what you will store, from tall books to display pieces.
02 Window Seats & Benches
A window seat is a favorite spot in many homes and a great place for hidden storage. We build seats with drawers or lift-up lids underneath, often flanked by bookshelves or cabinets as one built-in unit. In mudrooms and entries, built-in benches with cubbies and hooks give everyone a place to sit and drop their things. We size seats for comfortable cushions and plan for heating vents so airflow is not blocked.
Seat tops are built strong enough to stand on when you need to reach a window. Hinged lids get soft-close hardware so they do not slam on fingers, and drawers run on full-extension slides for easy access.
03 Media Walls & Entertainment Centers
A media wall organizes the TV, speakers, consoles and cables into one clean built-in. We build base cabinets for equipment with ventilation and cable access, shelving or paneling around the TV, and blocking for a wall mount. A paneled accent wall behind a TV, like the one in our photos, is a simpler option that still gives the room a focal point.
Equipment cabinets need airflow and access for wiring, so we plan grommets, removable backs and vented doors where needed. TV mounting blocking goes in before the paneling so the TV can be hung securely at the right height.
04 Bars, Butler's Pantries & Mudroom Lockers
Built-in bars and butler's pantries combine base cabinets, a countertop and glass-front uppers for glassware, sometimes with wine storage and a small sink. Mudroom lockers give each person a cubby with hooks, a shelf and a bench. Both projects mix cabinetry and finish carpentry, which is exactly our work, and can be painted to match or contrast with the rest of the room, like the navy bar shown here.
Mudroom lockers are sized for coats, backpacks and sports gear, with hooks at heights kids can reach. Bars can include under-counter refrigerators and lighting, which we plan with your electrician and plumber.

Designing a Built-In That Works
Start with what the built-in needs to hold. Books, a TV, shoes and glassware all need different depths and spacing. We also plan around outlets, switches, vents and window trim so the finished piece looks intentional.
Painted vs. Stained Built-Ins
Most built-ins are painted to match the trim, which suits both traditional and modern homes. Stained built-ins in oak, cherry or walnut give a richer library look and need more careful wood selection and joinery.

Built-Ins & Bookshelves FAQ
How long does it take to build a built-in?
A simple bookshelf or window seat may take a few days on site. Larger built-ins with cabinets, doors and lighting take longer. We give you a schedule with your quote.
Can built-ins include lighting?
Yes. We plan for puck lights or LED strips in shelving. An electrician makes the electrical connections.
Do you build built-ins on site or in a shop?
Most of our built-ins are built and fitted on site so they can be scribed to the actual walls, floors and ceilings.
Can you match my existing trim on a built-in?
Yes. We use crown, base and casing profiles that match the room so the built-in looks original.
